5:27 – Watch It Again, Get Something New

#faithbites #faithjourney again

Intro

Lately, I’ve been binge-watching Star Trek Enterprise. The show is over 20 years old and I think I kissed some episodes the first time around. As I’m watching it again, even the episodes I remember, seem different. The messages hi harder, are clearer, and evoke different emotions. Maybe the episodes haven’t changed but I have.

God’s word has the same effect on me. I’ve gone back, again and again, to the same chapters and verses and they felt differently. In some cases, a verse that didn’t speak to me now does. While his word never changes, how it impacts you may.

Questions
  • Have you gone back to a verse and it spoke to you differently this time around?
  • Why do you think God’s word has that power?
  • What can you do to ensure scripture is part of your daily life?
Scripture
  • Malachi 3:6 – “I the Lord do not change. So you, the descendants of Jacob, are not destroyed.
  • 2 Timothy 3:16– “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.”
  • Psalm 119:130 – The unfolding of your words gives light; it gives understanding to the simple.
Reflection

God never changes. If he never changes, then why would his word change? It doesn’t change, it’s the same yesterday as it is today. What has changed is you. God gave us his word so we can learn, be instructed, corrected, and grow. We don’t tell our kids when they are 3 how to drive a car, but we will tell them how to respect someone. When they are older, we may use those verses to help them understand something different. THis is the power of God’s word. It brings us light to the situation when we need it. It’s not archaic and antiquated. It’s above. What we have to do is be open to how the same scriptures we’ve seen for years, can help us learn something new. For me, it’s could be just randomly coming across a verse of the day, a verse that I’ve read again and again, and bam, it hits me differently. That’s a God moment. We shouldn’t be afraid of them and run to them.

As we close, remember while the words on the page may be static, how the words stir your spirit is ever changing. God’s words have power, let them fulfill you, help you learn, and grow in the faith.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, thank you for your guidance and your example. You went back to the scriptures that everyone read for thousands of years and it spoke to you differently. You’ve shown us that we can read the same thing again and again and get something different. Help us to never tire of your word. Help us to go back and learn how your word is impacting us today. In your name, we pray, Amen.
