222 – Do You Believe in Magic?
#faitbites #faithjourney magic
Webster’s has two definitions of magic. The first is the one we are most familiar with the use of means (such as charms or spells) believed to have supernatural power over natural forces. This is where we get our wizards, warlocks, witches, magic, and all kinds of questing games. I will get back to the second one in a minute.
My eldest and I had lots of fun playing Magiquest. Basically, it’s a live-action questing game where you hunt objects down, point your wands at different things and solve quests. It’s a lot of fun and great exercise as you are going up and down stairs, cargo nets, and more. (Yes, my knee is yelling at me know). My daughter was so into it. When we were struggling she said her wand was weak and needed more power to defeat the evil creatures. We were two wizards on a quest. What really surprised me was when fellow Wizards, (other players), needed help. She would go off and help them find what they were looking for. Then she would come back to me and said I needed to help another wizard. While she wanted to level up and solve the quests, she would easily stop to help others. I was so very proud of her.
As you know faithbites always has a spiritual twist, and this one is no different. This also comes to the point of the second definition of magic: an extraordinary power or influence seemingly from a supernatural source. If this doesn’t describe God, i don’t know what does. Supernatural doesn’t mean bad, it, just means beyond what humans can do. It also reminded me of a line in a Sarah Silverman special. (Yes, she can be very offensive. She is also a Jewish Comedian). In this skit, she was dating a Catholic guy and talked about having a baby. Then she said: The only time it’s an issue, I suppose, would be like if you’re having a baby and you’ve got to figure out how you want to raise it. Which still wouldn’t be an issue for us, because we’d be … honest, and just say, you know, like, “Mommy is one of the chosen people … and daddy believes that Jesus is magic!”
Now at first, I thought that is totally offensive. But after today and seeing Jesus through my daughter and what magic means, sure….Jesus is Magic. (Keep in mind, the second definition of magic, not the first or the demonic source some people think of).
Scripture on Magic or Miracles
(There is a great website that lists all 37 miracles: https://www.thoughtco.com/miracles-of-jesus-700158)
- Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but not with God; all things are possible with God.” – Mark 10:27
- I am the Lord, the God of all mankind. Is anything too hard for me? – Jeremiah 32:27
Reflection
Ok, so our current definitions of miracles and magic aren’t one in the same. The second definition of magic is closer. The point is two-fold. First is to have the belief of a child. My children believe in Wizards, fairies, goblins, and magic. They also believe in the Lord. They know that while the dragons and goblins can’t hurt or help them, the Lord is there with his miracles. If the Lord created everything, do you think he would forsake you or not be able to help? Of course not.
I know that solving quests and defeating monsters with an infrared wand won’t change the world, but believe in our Lord will.
Charge
Do you believe that the Lord is the Lord of all creation? Do you believe that he has and continues to create miracles in the world? If so, use your power of prayer to ask of him and listen to him. You won’t believe what happens.
Lord, help me to continue to believe in your and seek your love. Let the Holy Spirit flow through me.
