August 14 – Selling Your Possessions
4:226 – Selling Your Possessions

#faithbites.#faithjourney selling

Setting

Yesterday, I told you how my wife’s grandmother was helping us clean house. One side effect of cleaning is getting rid of all the clutter you find. Some is garbage, others is soemkens treasure. Today has been selling a lot of that stuff. It’s been bitter sweet as.some of it was my Dad’s but at the same time, I’m letting go of the junk. I don’t need stuff to remind me of him.

Selling your possesions can be good and freeing. The idea of selling leads to today’s main Bible verse where Jesus told someone how to be perfect.

Today’s Questions: Are you willing to sell everything to be perfect? What would your life look like if you own nothing and has nothing. Could you survive?

Scripture
  • Matthew 19:21 – Jesus answered, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”
  • Luke 22:35Then Jesus asked them, “When I sent you without purse, bag or sandals, did you lack anything?” “Nothing,” they answered.
Reflection

Jesus is telling us two main things. First, if we want to be perfect, sell everything and follow him and we will have treasure in heaven. I don’t know how many people could do that. I’d be afraid that I wouldn’t ha e what I need. While I know God gives.ms what I need, I would be frightened. That fear is answered in the second verse. Jesus sent his disciples out with nothing and asked them if they lacked. Their response was nothing! God provided for them.

I am a blessed child of God in that I can acknowledge my fears and shortcomings and be forgiven..I don’t have to worry about going without. Sure, I need to be careful with my resources as they are God’s. He chose us to be stewards of his resources. We thank him for that.

Having “stuff” is ok. There is no sin in that. It’s when we become gluttons or hoarders and it takes away from God is when we have problems. Sell things if you want and get rid of the clutter.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, thank you for paving the path for us. You tell us that we don’t need stuff to be saved. That if we gave up everything and followed you, we would have salvation. Thank you for that. We pray that you help us manage your resources wisely. Help us sell stuff we don’t need and put that money to good use. We pray this in your name, Amen.
