September 19 – Fasting Isn’t For Others
2:262 – Fasting Isn’t For Others

#faithbites #faithjourney #redletterchallenge fasting

Have you ever fasted? I know I have. Until today, I didn’t realize that fasting could be something more than just food or the true purpose. Fasting isn’t so others no you are sacrificing. You also can’t “fast” from something that isn’t truly important or meaningful.

I abstained from coffee for six weeks and that was rough. I can’t say it was fasting as there wasn’t a deeper meaning. It didn’t free me up to talk to God, nor did it change my outlook.

Fasting is another form of conversation with God. It isn’t to kill or harm you, but help you experience a bit of suffering. During that time, you are freed up either in time (if you are giving up a time consuming activity) or in head space (if it’s a mental activity) to be with Jesus.

If you are thinking about fasting, think about they why before the what.

Scripture
  • And when you fast, do not look gloomy like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, that your fasting may not be seen by others but by your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you. – Mathew 6:16-18
  • For forty days, being tempted by the devil. And he ate nothing during those days. And when they were ended, he was hungry. – Luke 4:2
Reflection

Jesus fasted for 40 days and 40 nights in his temptation with the Devil. He did it for the same reason we do it; To be closer to God. We also see that we don’t fast for others to know we are suffering. Sure, depending on how you are fasting, you may need to let others know. Not for sympathy, but rather for safety. (I.E You leave social media for a long time and you are a regular user, some may get worried. You give up food, some may need to know to make sure you are ok).

Step 1 is why you are fasting. Are you making an important decision? Have you drifted from God? Do you need guidance?

Step 2 is how are you fasting. Is it from food? Social Media? Coffee?

Step 3 is what are you going to do during the time you freed up? What is your plan to be with God.

If you can answer these questions, then you are ready to fast. It’s a time for suffering and reflection. The Lord will be with you.

Challenge

Try a 24 hour fast on something. Maybe it’s social media. Maybe it’s sweets. See how you feel and how your prayer/worship time is improved.

Prayer

Lord, help us to be closer to you. Give us the strength to willingly give us something for you. Help us to do it safely and to use the time to be more with you. Help us not to see attention for this, but rather to reflect and be with you. We know you are great, awesome, and powerful. Guide us in this new challenge as we learn more about you. Amen
