257 – If You’re Gonna Walk on Water Would You Drop a Line My Way
#faithbites #faithjourney #countingcrows line
Have you ever had a day when you just don’t feel good enough? A day when you feel you are drowning or underwater? Maybe it seems that others seem to walk on water and the only thing you can do is walk on the bottom? If you didn’t answer yes to at least one of these questions, I’d guess you may be lying to yourself.
The title of this #faithbite is taking from one of my favorite Counting Crows Songs: Omaha. The lyric is: “Hey, mister, if you want to walk on water. would you drop a line my way?”
For years I’ve listened to the song, sung alone but it wasn’t until today that I got it. I’m slow sometimes. The person singing is underwater and drowning. He wants the man to drop a line to him.
Picture that in your head. You are underwater and can’t get to the surface. You see someone walking on the top of the water. How would you get help? Having a line dropped your way would be good I think.
Guess what? There is someone who walks on water: Jesus.
Scripture on LifeLines
- It’s an unbreakable spiritual lifeline, reaching past all appearances right to the very presence of God – Hebrews 6:19 MSG
- We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain. – Hebrews 6:19 NIV
Reflection
We know that Jesus walked on water (Matthew 14:22-33). We even know that his disciples thought he was a ghost and were afraid of him. Even after he identifies himself, the disciples still do not believe. Peter challenges Jesus to order him to come to him on the water. Jesus enabled Peter to walk on the water but when he was afraid he began to sink. Jesus said you of little faith, why did you doubt?
I have had many times when I felt like I was on the bottom sinking in. My faith has been challenged. I know that Jesus is there and he will help any one of us to walk on water.
But what do you do when you are walking on water? Do you drop a line to people below you or as the song Omaha continues “Hey, mister, if you want to walk on water ‘Cause you’re only going to walk all over me”. Not only should we trust in the Lord but when we are on top, we need to make sure we don’t walk all over people. How do we show them His love through us? What kind of lines can we drop to people?
A friend of mine dropped me a line. It was a funny video of a guy just saying you are awesome. That he loves me and Jesus loves me. It’s pretty cool. I then dropped a line to others to share how awesome they were.
We have an unbreakable spiritual lifeline, we just need to know that his name is Jesus
Charge
When you are on top do you drop a lifeline or do you walk all over people? Think about what it feels like to be on the bottom. Then, think about how you can help others. Maybe it’s a funny video or a simple text. Maybe it’s bringing them a dessert or a piece of candy. Perhaps its just being an ear for them to talk to. How you drop a line is up to you. Dropping a line is what we should do.
Lord, help me to realize that I am on top of the water most days. Allow me to drop a line to those in need. At the same time, allow me to grab a line when it is tossed to me as I need it more than I will know.
