2:7 – Are You Hiding In Your Headphones?

Walking down the streets of Chicago, I see most people with there eyes on their screens and their ears covered in their headphones. In reality, this is everywhere, just go to campus. Today, on my way to Chicago, I heard a Reel Big Fish song I had never heard of before: Hiding in my headphones.

The song is all about closing off all the negativity in the world, not caring what others say, and living how you want. It’s a pretty awesome outlook. The beat I dance to in my head may be different than your beat, but it doesn’t make it wrong.

The more I thought about that, the more I thought about faith. What if we treated our faith like our headphones? What are we keeping in and what are we keeping out?

Scripture

• If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit. – Galatians 5:25
• For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths. 2 Timothy 4:3-4
• As for a person who stirs up division, after warning him once and then twice, have nothing more to do with him, – Titus 3:10

Reflection

Our headphones are great at keeping the world out and helping us keep our thoughts and world to ourselves. At the same time, we can be oblivious to what’s out there, and we can ignore the folks who need help.

If we look at our faith as a set of headphones, can it do both things? We can live by the spirit, we can ignore people who stir up division, wrong teachings, and division. We have our faith in our heart protecting us, leading us on Christ’s Path. No matter what people say, do, or try to turn on us, we have God’s Word, and He is truth.

We have to be careful of the second issue of hiding in our headphones: ignoring others. If we are only living internally by our faith and not sharing it, we are robbing people of hearing about Christ, and can be limiting what God wants us to do. I’m not saying be a corner preacher like we’ve talked about before. You share how you feel comfortable. But our faith needs to be lived. We need to take off the headphones, and see where we can serve.

Charge

When do you wear your faith headphones? Are you reaching out to others? Are you using them to protect you from the negativity? Try to take share the music with someone new. See how it can influence them and bring them light. When things get tough, and, they will, put on your headphones and believe in Christ always.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, we are under attack. We have people who say you don’t exist, your son isn’t real, and our faith is wrong. There are people who practice the faith but it’s not what your word is. Give us your strength to wear our headphones to block out the negativity and live in your light. Give us the knowledge and talent to reach out to those who need to hear your music. In Jesus’s name, Amen.
