2:224 – I’m The King Of Wishful Thinking
#faithbites #faithjourney wishful
Setting
i woke up sad this morning. Actually, I went to bed sad and woke up sad. I had a few people let me down yesterday when I needed help. I’m not blaming them, it just seems par for the course sometimes when I ask for help.
When I woke up, the song, King of Wishful Thinking by Go West, was stuck in my head. Part of the chorus is, “I’ll get over you I know I will I’ll pretend my ship’s not sinking And I’ll tell myself I’m over you ‘Cause I’m the king of wishful thinking”. This is me in a nutshell. I am the king of wishful thinking.
Today’s Questions: What does it mean to be the king of wishful thinking? Is this a good thing or a bad thing? How can we set our expectations for others and not let it get us down?
Scripture
- 1 Peter 1:13 – Therefore, preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.
- 2 Corinthians 4:18 – “So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.”
Reflection
There is wishful thinking and then there is hope. Wishful thinking is what we want and what we hope for. It is often fraught with disappointment because we put it in the hands of others. Will they step up and answer the call? Will it turn out the way we wanted it to. On the other hand, there is hope, more specifically, Biblical hope. This is the hope that God will answer his promises. 1 Peter tells us how to set our minds for this hope and know that all will be given through Christ. Likewise, in 2 Corinthians, Paul specifically tells us not to have wishful thinking but to set our hope on God as he is eternal.
Does this mean we shouldn’t have expectations of others? Does this mean that we should let others walk all over us? Of course not. We can have realistic expectations but try not to dabble in wishful thinking. We have hope in Christ and through him all things are possible.
As we close, remember our future is secured through Christ. We have nothing to worry about. If we set out eyes on him, all things will work out.
Prayer
Father God, we come to you with heavy hearts. The world has often let us down, but you never do. Heal our sadness and help us transition from wishful thinking to people of hope. Hope that we will see the second coming of Jesus. Hope that you will heal this land, us, and all your people. We know that you always answer prayers in your time, by your way, and your will. We pray this in your name, Amen.
