Do you value your work?

Setting

As many of you know, I have been 3D printing for about a year. I decided today to have a Facebook store to sell some of the prints. When I was looking around at what to change, some of my colleagues were charging double or triple what I was thinking of charging. Then someone else asked why it cost so much. I try to be reasonable but was told I’m undervaluing my work. The cost that we put on something has to show the value we put in it. If you sell it that’s different as others may value things differently. For example, a print Grogu mashup (baby Yoda) was selling for $75 – 100 painted. I can’t believe people would pay that. Those making it told me it depends on how you value the work.

God gave us each work to do. We amazingly and miraculously made (Psalm 139:13-14). The work we have to do is unique to us. We have to value that work. If we don’t value it no one else does. When we do value it and others don’t, then it is time to find someone who will.

Today’s Questions: How do you set the cost of products or services you provide? How does that cost represent the value of your time, talent, and energy?

Scripture
  • Genesis 2:!5 – The Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it.
  • Genesis 3:19 – By the sweat of your face you shall eat bread, till you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; for you are dust, and to dust you shall return.”
  • Proverbs 14:23 – In all toil there is profit, but mere talk tends only to poverty.
  • Proverbs 12:11 – Whoever works his land will have plenty of bread, but he who follows worthless pursuits lacks sense.
Reflection

Work is something that is praised in the Bible. Not all work, but work that glorifies God. We need to look at that work and realize it has value. Doing a mission trip or service work is more than just the hours you were there or the task you did. That work has deep value as it improves the lives of others. Your cost to perform that work has a huge return on value for those who receive it.

There is nothing wrong with asking for a fair price for a fair day’s work. If you don’t value what you are doing, and that can be seen in how you charge for your goods and services, then others won’t value it. We are called to work to keep what we have been given and in return, we will have plenty of bread.

As we close, remember two things. Work is good if it glorifies God. We should value our work so that others value it as well. If we don’t value it, others won’t. If we value our work and others don’t, then we need to find those who will.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, youv’e called us to work. Help us to do work that has value and help us to value the work we do. Don’t let get walked on by those who don’t appreciate us or our work. Help us to focus on those tasks that have value to you. Help us to stop doing those have don’t have value or aren’t what you want us to do. We pray for your guidance and help as we move forward doing your work. In your name, Amen.
