Apr 28 – What’s For Supper?
3:119 – What’s For Supper?

#faithbites #faithjourney supper

I’m hungry, but not for dinner. I grilled some burgers, we had chips and cottage cheese. I ate too much but I’m still hungry. I could have some ice cream or nachos but I don’t think that will fill my hunger.

I want supper, more specifically, the Lord’s Supper. This is the longest I have gone without it since I started taking it. If you recall, it took me a year after being baptized to assure myself that I was worthy of it. Mind you, God knew I was, I didn’t think so. As of right now, I think it’s been 6 weeks. And that’s six weeks too long.

Before I was baptized, I never understood that if the Lord’s Supper was an ever lasting covenants, why did you need to do it more than once. A friend said, imagine the best meal you’ve ever had, one that fuffiled every need, wouldn’t you want it as often as possible? The answer is Yes. Yes, I Do.

Scripture
  • Matthew 26:26-28 – While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body.” Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.
  • 1 Corinthians 11:23-27 – For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.”  In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.” For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.
  • John 6:35 – Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.
Reflection

Blood poured out for forgiveness of sins. Never going hungry and never going thirsty. This is powerful imagery. And it’s more than that, it’s the foundation of our belief.

Our Lord died and was raised from the dead. He gave his body and his blood for us. When we take communion we are remembering that sacrifice, joining everyone who has taken communion before, and remembering everything he has done and everything that awaits for us upon his return.

I don’t know when I will take formal communion again, but I am hungry for it.

Challenge

Are you missing the Lord’s Supper? Think of it this way, you are fasting. Fasting helps us become more centered and more clear. When we don’t have His body and blood to sustain us, we miss it. It helps us realize how important he is.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, we miss gathering together and taking part in your Supper. Help us remember your sacrifice as we fast and wait for a time we can come back together and come to your table. Give us your strength and determination to remember everything you have done for us and everything you have prepared us on the future. In your name, Amen.
