3:72 – Have Faith. Be Safe. Don’t Test God

Turn on the news and all you hear about is COVID19, the disease caused by the coronavirus. Schools being closed, all major sports being postponed or cancelled, large group gatherings cancelled, stores out of supplies.

There is a lot of fear right now. I have heard some people say that if you believe in God you won’t get sick. That God protects his people. Some have gone as far as saying this is God punishing the unbelievers.

Here’s the truth. God loves you and wants the best for you. We also shouldn’t test God. He has given our doctor’s, nurses, and scientists the skills to help us. This includes following precautions. So we can have faith, be safe, and not test God.

Scripture
  • “You shall not put the LORD your God to the test, as you tested him at Massah.” – Deuteronomy 6:16
  • Jesus said to him, “On the other hand, it is written, ‘YOU SHALL NOT PUT THE LORD YOUR GOD TO THE TEST.'” – Matthew 4:7
  • Again and again they tempted God, And pained the Holy One of Israel. – Psalm 78:41
Reflection

Satan tried to tempt Jesus to test God. Jesus refused. Throughout scripture, we’re told do not test God. Instead, we are to fear and love him.

We need to be vigilant in our faith and in our protection. God has put his children into our paths with medicine and precautions to protect all of us.

As part of this, we need to love and help everyone. There are people who can’t work and won’t get paid. Let us help them and come together as God’s family and support each other during this crises. God will get us through this if we trust him, love him, and be safe.

Challenge

How can you show your faith and trust? Sometimes it’s hard, sometimes it’s easy. Find a way to stay firm in your faith and understand God is always working.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, your people are scared right now. There is much fear for this virus, not only the sickness but also how they will cope, make ends meet, and support each other. Help us to stay strong in faith, use caution, and trust in you. Amen.
