3:50 – No Shortcuts

#faithbites #faithjourney shortcuts

My eldest was doing English homework tonight and had to chose between more and most when modifying adjectives. A couple of minutes later, I asked if she was done. She said no, because she had to rewrite the whole sentence, not just adding more or most.

At first, I thought that was a waste of her time. Then, I realized that it was giving her writing and spelling practice that she needed. No shortcuts.

In our quest to follow Jesus, there are no shortcuts. No magic wand to take away our shortcomings or make the journey easier. We will make mistakes and fail. We know that we can ask for and receive forgiveness when that happens. The key is to know we have work to do and we are not alone.

Scripture
  • “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it.” – Matthew 7:13
  • Go your way; behold, I am sending you out as lambs in the midst of wolves. – Luke 10:3
Reflection

A short reflection tonight. There are many roads and paths to travel in life. There is only one road that leads to Jesus, with many others leading to destruction. Jesus even tells us that following him will be challenging an difficult.

Our sinful nature seeks shortcuts and the easy road. Those wide roads are full of temptation.

We often say, if it’s too good to be true, it probably is. The only exception to that is the eternal salvation and forgiveness given by Christ.

So, while my daughter doesn’t like to write out her full sentences, she will learn from it. Just like learn the way of Jesus, through hardship and trial.

Challenge

Have you been looking for shortcuts to grace? Take a moment to realize that there are no shortcuts. Ask Jesus for direction on your path. He will provide it. It won’t be easy, but it will be good.

Prayer

Lord, thank you for being with us through thick and thin. We often try to get to our destination as soon as possible at all costs. Remind us that there are no shortcuts to salvation and a life serving you. Give us the fortitude needed to not only survive but thrive. We want to be your servants, help us always follow you no matter the twists and turns in our road. In your name, Amen.
