2:142 – The Greatest American Hero
#faithbites #faithjourney hero
One of my favorite TV shows growing up was The Greatest American Hero. My family gathered to watch it every week. It’s about a run of the mill, average Joe, who finds a super suit that Aliens accidentally left on Earth. What makes it fun, is there is no instruction manual. He has to figure it out himself. On top of that, he decides to use it for good to help others even though it puts him at risk.
When I think about my life, I want to be the hero of my own story. I want to help those who need it, fix what is broken, be there for anyone who needs it no matter the cost to myself.
It’s hard to be a hero with a super suit without an instruction manual. For me, I have no super suit, but I do have the hero instruction manual. We just need to read it and understand it to be the hero of our story.
Scripture
- All Bible Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right.” – 2 Timothy 3:16
- and know His will and approve the things that are essential, being instructed out of the Law, – Romans 2:18
- I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye upon you. – Psalm 32:8
Reflection
We know that the Bible is the inspired word of God. He instructs us through his word on what is right, wrong, and how to live our lives. We also know that he is watching us and guiding us.
The thing to remember that while the Bible provides instructions, it’s not an instruction manual perse. It doesn’t provide a step by step checklist like building a bed from Ikea. The Bible gives us how to live but also knows we will skip steps, make mistakes, and even have extra parts. Those mistakes is where why we need Jesus. He forgives and saves when we mess up or don’t read the instructions.
The Greatest American Hero always did what was best because it was in his heart and use the suit to the best of his abilities. We likewise can use the instruction of God and the forgiveness of Christ to accomplish all things.

Take a minute to look at what guides you. What instructions do you use? Open up scripture and see what God has in store for you.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank you for your Word. While we don’t also follow the instructions you provided, we try and know Jesus will forgive our sins. Help us to be better at following your Word and relying on it, instead of our own devices. In your name, Amen.
