January 19 – That Didn’t Work. Let’s Order Pizza
2:19 – That Didn’t Work. Let’s Order Pizza

#faithbites #faithjourney pizza

I like to cook. My family loves when I cook and try new things. I’m always a little nervous as I don’t want to waste the money on the ingredients or make something that people don’t like. Tonight, I tried a new skillet cheese bread loaf and garlic brown sugar bacon wrapped chicken. I was anxious that it would turn out, but my wife say, if it doesn’t we have food. In our house we made a rule, if it doesn’t work out, we’ll order pizza.

Having that understand lets us experiment more, have less fear, and know that we will be taken care of no matter what. God has given us something better than pizza when things go wrong: Jesus. We have the freedom to try new things, and when they go wrong, he will always protect us and keep us safe.

Scripture
  • When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost,” they said, and cried out in fear. But Jesus immediately said to them: “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.” “Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.” “Come,” he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. – Matthew 14:26-29
  • Instead, you ought to say, “If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that.” – James 4:15
  • Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. – John 14:27
Reflection

The challenges we face in our daily lives are usually much more difficult than trying a new recipe and failing. We make choices and take or don’t take risks daily. Many of us, including myself, are afraid to take a risk. We’re not sure what tomorrow will be. I am trying not to be afraid as God is already there.

Imagine if you were on the boat with the disciples and saw someone walking on the water. Then you you believed but were afraid. Would you walk on the water, knowing you would probably fall in the water? Is your faith strong enough to overcome what our minds are telling us? I hope that I would be like Peter if faced with that risk.

I could have opted to not try to make the bread or the chicken tonight. We would have had a decent dinner of some sort of pasta and a basic chicken dish. Tonight, we were treated to something very yummy and new. There have been and will be times when the risk fails and we order pizza, also good.

Failure is not the end. Even when my recipes turn out horrible, I learn something and try something different next time. When we fail in life, it’s not a failure but rather a lesson we need for the future. Do not fret. God will be there for us.

Charge

Are you contemplating taking a risk Are you afraid that it may go wrong? Look back on your life. There probably have been choices you made that went well and choices that didn’t go so well. For the ones that didn’t go well, did you learn? Was God there to give you a hand? Remember, that we may burn a meal or too, but our diet is complete with Jesus.

Prayer

Heavenly Lord, I have failed recently. I have wasted time, energy, and effort on a large project. Help me to realize that it isn’t a failure but a chance to learn something new. Let us remember that no matter how many times we fail at something, you are there to pick us up, dust us off, and set us back on our path. In Jesus’s name, Amen.
