October 15 – If You Can’t Teach, Can You Facilitate?
288 – If You Can’t Teach, Can You Facilitate?

#faithbites #faithjourney facilitate

If you asked me a year ago if I’d be teaching in a medical school, I would tell you no way. I’m not a doctor, nor do I have enough training as a basic scientist to teach them anything related to the curriculum. Yet, today, I had my first day as a substitute facilitator for one of our groups. I was told I did very well and received some feedback.  I know it was only one day, but I think I got this down. Did I have to study a bit? Sure. Did I ask questions? Sure. Do I know everything there is to know? Nope. I knew enough to follow the notes and asking good questions for our students to learn.

I liken this to ministry. Many of you have said you want to share your story but don’t know how to.  If you are a witness, maybe you will say the wrong thing or not know scripture off the tips of your tongue. Guess what? You may not be called to be a teacher or a scholar of the Bible. That’s ok. You can be a facilitator for Jesus.

Scripture
  • And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching. – Hebrews 10:24-25
  • As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace: – 1 Peter 4:10
  • “And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write: ‘The words of the holy one, the true one, who has the key of David, who opens and no one will shut, who shuts and no one opens. “‘I know your works. Behold, I have set before you an open door, which no one is able to shut. I know that you have but little power, and yet you have kept my word and have not denied my name. – Revelation 3:7-8
Reflection

My dad once said to me, that I would never be an Olympian but I could coach a champion. At first, I thought it meant that I wasn’t good enough to be a champ. But then I realized that the ability to coach and facilitate was my role in life. I could bring people to Christ through his works and not my own. I could lead them to teachers of religious law and doctrine. Through this, we can facilitate the work of the Lord without being a teacher.

Don’t let not having the perfect words or perfect actions stop you from sharing the Lord. He will work in you and through you. Most aren’t looking for the perfect scripture or the perfect doctrine. They are looking for the living Christ and a connection. You can be that connection.

Charge

Do you consider yourself a witness for Christ? Do you want to be? Most of us are not meant to be teachers of religious law or doctrine. We are not commanded to be a shepherd for an earthly flock. In fact, God was us to be his facilitators. Take a minute to share your story with someone. No need for perfect scripture or perfect words. Your story has power through the Holy Spirit.

Lord, allow me to use the gifts you give me. Help me to realize that I don’t need to know the ins and out of your word to facilitate others coming to you. Help me as I grow in my faith to share my story with others.
