213 – The Earworms are in my head!!!
#faithbites #faithjourney earworms
Have you heard of the term earworm? It originally was defined as a worm that that was on corn. Lately, it has been redefined as “a catchy song or tune that runs continually through a person’s mind”. We have all had earworms. That song that won’t get out of your head and you have no understanding of why it is there. Most of the time it’s a bad song that you want out. Maybe it didn’t start as a bad song but after it goes through your head a million times, you just want it to stop. You want to clean it with something else.
Last week we had Vacation Bible School at our church. As always, the songs are catchy for the kids and have a deeper meaning. During the end of last week and the first part of this week, I woke up with the song “My Lighthouse” stuck in my head. Then today, I woke up with “Holy Spirit” by Jesus Culture. Now, as spiritual as I try to be, I don’t regularly listen to Christian music stations. I like some of the songs and love to sing in church. Waking up with these earworms for the past week has been strange for me. I wonder if this is an example of the Holy Spirit (yes I get the irony here) trying to work through me. Is the Lord wanting me to use these songs to clear my mind and focus on him?
Do you get songs or scripture stuck in your head?
Scripture on Earworms and Clearing Your Mind
- But you, keep your head in all situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, discharge all the duties of your ministry. – 2 Timothy 4:%
- Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.- Colossians 3:2
Reflection
I can be thankful that my earworm isn’t something like “The Lion Sleeps Tonight”. Now try to get that out of your head. While I have been under a lot of stress and pressure, this choice of earworm is interesting to me. There are so many things going on in life that draw our focus away from God, away from the community, and away from his word. Waking up with these songs may be his way of helping to clear the clutter and get back to basics.
Today I will try to focus on breathing and clearing my mind for the Lord. His message, which I am sharing with you, maybe to spend just a bit more time on his word and heavenly things rather than on the world and earthly things.
Charge
Think about the last time you had a song, quote, or scripture in your head. Can you share it with others? What does that say about you? Are you willing to take a few extra minutes to worship God and see what his plans for you are?
I am willing with the help of God. (And we’ll see if I have another earworm in my head when I wake up tomorrow)
