June 4 – What did you learn?

What did you learn?

From point A to point B. That seems to be what life is like most days. We go from home to work or home to school and vice versa. We go on a vacation then back home. We travel for work then back home. We go to church then back home. You get it.

When we come back from wherever we went, we usually get the same questions:

  • How was your trip?
  • Did you have a good time?
  • Where did you go?
  • What did you eat?
  • What did you do?

I have had the conversation so many times with my daughter. How was school? Who did you play with? What did you eat for lunch? These questions are the surface level questions that we ask over and over again. I was thinking about this because I will be going on a business trip. I already thought about my return and the questions people will ask. I like to give an after trip report but usually, they are short, surface-level, and don’t bring a lot back.

The same can be said for going to church/worship. How was church? Who did you see? How was the message? How was Sunday School?

The biggest question that we forget most times is: What did you learn?

If we are going through life and not learning, how are we growing? How are we sharing that experience with others?

“Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.” – Philippians 4:9

“Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” – Matthew 11:29-30

“Teach them to your children. Talk about them when you sit in your house and when you walk on the road and when you lie down and when you get up.” – Deuteronomy 11:19

Moses didn’t tell the Israelites here is the word of God, keep it to yourself. He didn’t take the commandments from God and hide them in his house. He shared them. He told the people to talk about God’s law all day and every day. If we don’t learn from God (information) and take action (knowledge) then we fail. Just like being in school, we can learn a lot of information but if we don’t have the knowledge to use it, we have a much harder time in life. In Matthew, Jesus says to take his yoke and learn from him. Rest our souls. When we learn how to be Christ-Like, and share it, then everyone is closer to God and our cup overflows into them. Their cup overflows and so on and so forth.

Our God is a God of action. We need to be a people of action. The biggest part of that is sharing what we have learned.

Some don’t want to share or are uncomfortable. It is up to all of us to change the conversation. Instead of saying “how was your trip?” or “how was church?”, let’s ask “What did you learn today?”

Are you ready to share your information AND knowledge? Will you ask someone what they learned today?

I am ready and will ask with the help of God.
