March 31 – Chosen Family

#90of365 #FaithBites #FaithJourney

Today’s lesson is about chosen family or our friends. They say you can’t pick your family but you can pick you friends. In English, we only have one word for friend, in German there are many different words that mean friend and different levels of friendship. In short, we have friends and aquaintences.

While I have many people that I love and am close to, there are very few that are my family. I got to see my best friend today. I haven’t seen him in 15 months. One second together, and were back to the way we were. Same jokes, same sense of humour. Love him.

We are all children of the same God. We can’t chose that but we can choose who we treat as family. Ideally, we would want everyone to be family.

“One who has unreliable friends soon comes to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.” – Proverbs 18:24

My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” – John 15:12-13

Facebook may say we have hundreds of thousands of friends. But would you lay down your life for them? As I joked: Friends help you move, real friends help you move bodies,. How do you treat your friends. Do you hold them close? Are they family to you? The Lord blesses us with great friends. Jesus is our friend. He laid down his life for us. My best friend has been in my life for nearly 28 years. I don’t know what my life would like with him.

Are you willing to really look at who you call friends? Are you willing to see the love that is all around you in the form of friends?

I am willing (with the help of God)?
