Today’s lesson is about priorities.
I know I’ve talked about being busy and making time for what is important. I also know it is easier said than done. I wanted to share another story of my kids helping me to be a better parent and stronger in my faith. This morning, Cece was up early and then Alice woke up. Alice climbed into our bed to snuggle. Then she said, “Daddy, rub my back”. I started rubbing her back and my head started racing. We have to get ready for church. I have things for Brownies to print. Who is coming to cookie pick-up tomorrow? How am I going to run the girl scout meeting? (Did I mention it’s cookie season). What is going to happen at work tomorrow? What do I need to do for laundry?
As these thoughts kept racing through my head, I had the desire to get up and start moving. But then I looked at my daughter. Eyes closed. Slow breathing. Peaceful. Safe. As my hand went up and down her back, she was at peace. I had to realize that the most important thing I could be doing at that moment was being present. Cuddling her. Rubbing her back. That was why I was here. I had to keep my thoughts from going back to all the other stuff, but I knew what was important. Being her dad. Bringing her comfort. All of this only lastest about five minutes. It is five minutes that she may forget what happened, but won’t forget I was there.
“Anyone who does not provide for their relatives, and especially for their own household, has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.” – 1 Timothy 5:8
“Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children. 2 And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.” Ephesians 5:1-2 (ESV)
God tells us all throughout the bible he loves us. He tells us that we are his children. He wants us to be happy. He wants us to be peaceful, safe, and comforted. As I rub my daughters back, God rubs our back. Be an imitator of God. Walk in love. Be present. It’s not easy but your children (and your friends and family) will cherish your time.
