January 25 – Perception or Angels in the Cemetery

Today’s lesson is on tradition/perception or Angels in the Cemetery.

A topic that has been on my mind a lot is the difference between faith, God, and religion. I won’t go into in depth here but this plays to that theme.

Before my Grandmother’s funeral, we were looking at the flowers people sent. Keep in mind this is a Jewish cemetery. The lady was telling us what could and couldn’t go to the gravesite. Glass, of course, couldn’t go. Then there was a beautiful arrangement that had an angel in the middle. The lady said it couldn’t go out. My mother asked if it’s because it’s glass. The lady said no, it has an angel and angels aren’t allowed in a Jewish cemetery.

I thought this was odd. Last time I checked there are angels of God all over the old testament. This was odd.

The younger me would have confronted her right away but it wasn’t the time or the place.

“Do not add to his words, lest he rebuke you and you be found a liar.” – Proverbs 30:6

“And we also thank God continually because, when you received the word of God, which you heard from us, you accepted it not as a human word, but as it actually is, the word of God, which is indeed at work in you who believe” – 1 Thessalonians 2:13

———-
This is a small example of how we as humans take the word and twist it. (Religion vs God vs Faith) .Over the years our traditions supplant the word. We need to remember the word and live in It. At the same time, we need to remember to be patient, kind, and loving. Confirmation doesn’t help in some of these cases. Discussions can help.
