Setting

I often wonder what I’m supposed to be when I grow up bouncing from thing to thing and even then don’t think I’m good enough or worthy enough. Knowing God has a plan is different than feeling you are worthy to be in it. I think that I’m not a good enough father, son, worker, husband, employee, or any of a hundred other things. When a job becomes available I think there is no way someone will select me. And if by some miracle they do, will I do a good job at it. Or am I worthy to even be considered for that position?

The idea of worthiness, which is tied to promotions, positions of power, and more, isn’t one that I like to discuss. It seems like you are fishing for compliments when you say you aren’t worthy or, it may put doubt in someone’s mind that maybe you aren’t worthy enough for them. I don’t. What I do know is God tells me he loves me, Jesus died for my sins, and the Holy Spirit is always there helping to build faith.

Today’s questions: What makes you doubt you are “good enough” for something? How do you know that you are worth to God?

Scripture
  • Isaiah 43:4 – Because you are precious in my eyes, and honored, and I love you, I give men in return for you, peoples in exchange for your life.
  • Galatians 2:20 – I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.
Reflection

Today’s scriptures point to our true value in God’s eyes. He loves us, we are precious and he gives men in return for us. While this is written in Isaiah, we know it foreshadows the coming of Christ. The other piece, and probably the hardest, is we need to get over ourselves. When we are baptized in Jesus, the old self falls away and something new is created. If after baptism, we are saying we aren’t worthy, what we are actually saying is God isn’t enough. That Jesus didn’t select us, didn’t know us, nor that he loves us. I refused to believe this.

We are worthy, loved, cherished, and enough. As children of Christ, it is up to us to use his power to make a difference in the world. We aren’t alone and can always ask for help, guidance, and support.

As we close, I challenge you to remember you are enough for any challenge he brings. Stop selling yourself short!

Prayer

Lord God, you tell us that your grace is sufficient and we are loved. Our sin and the Devils’ temptation make us feel that we aren’t enough or are we deserving of what you have to offer. Today we pray for comfort and reassurance that not only is your grace sufficent but we are worthy of your love and everything that comes our way. You sacrificed so much so we could be loved, forgiven, and make a difference in this world. We pray all of this in your name, Amen.
