5:71 – Boss Up and change your life

Intro

Have you ever heard either of these phrases: “Pull yourself up by your bootstraps” or “If you work hard enough, you can do anything”. I know I have and it’s made me feel that I can do anything if I just work hard enough. But is that true? Can I fly if I work hard enough? Can I join the NBA if I work hard enough? Do I have the skills and abilities to work hard enough? Maybe not. There is a piece missing. In the song, Good as Hell by Lizzo, there is a lyric that says, “Boss Up and change your life”. This relates directly to the sentiment that you can do it all.

What if we thought of this lyric differently. What if we change Boss to God? God Up and change your life.

Scripture

• Colossians 3:23-24 – Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ. (God Is Our Boss)
• Galatians 2:20 – I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. (New Life)

Reflection

Imagine if we truly set God as our Boss and really bossed up. If we decided that because of our faith in Christ, we would change our life, what would that look like? .We would no longer rely on just trying as hard as possible without direction or support. God helps us move forward, gives us purpose, and direction.

In our world, we put personal strength and grit and say that it is a meritocracy without knowing the circumstances of the person. Without God, we aren’t working as efficiently or effectively as we can. God is our power and can change our life.

As we close, remember that if we Boss Up (God is our focus) then through him we can change our lives. Likewise, others who are suffering and struggling may not be able to “Pull themselves up by their bootstraps”, without God’s help. Be Godsa eyes, ears, ajnds, and feet and help others, Boss up.

Prayer

Lord God, we love you and thank you for all you give us. Lord you are our Boss and we will work hard to please you and follow your word. We pray that you help us all to follow you and change our lives as you’ve planned.
