Setting

According to the second edition of the Oxford English Dictionary, there are 171,476 current and 47,156 obsolete words in the English language. Sometimes there doesn’t seem to be enough words or the right words to express how we are feeling.

Do you ever feel that you said the wrong thing or you can’t express how you are really feeling? As expansive as our language is, it is still lacking. With my issues with pain, I’ve wished my doctor could feel what I’m feeling because I don’t have the exact words to express the pain. If he could just feel it, he’d get it. Do you ever wish that someone would just understand and get it? Maybe we don’t have the right words, but we can get inspiration from God.

Scripture

• Romans 8:26 – And the Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness. For example, we don’t know what God wants us to pray for. But the Holy Spirit prays for us with groanings that cannot be expressed in words
• Psalm 86:11 – Teach me your ways, O Lord,that I may live according to your truth. Grant me purity of heart, so that I may honor you.

Reflection

God knows what is in our heart. Jesus has given us the Lord’s prayer when we don’t know what to pray for. The Holy Spirit understands what is in our hearts. Together they help us live according to his ways.

It is not easy to express how we are feeling. Sometimes my heart hurts when I can’t express myself. I know this sounds weird, but I wish I was a Care Bear. Remember when they would use their belly marks and Ray’s would shoot out expressing their feelings? That would take the place of words and get what I feel across.

We have faith in the Lord that when our words fail us, the Lord fills in the blanks. Faith is more powerful than words.

Challenge

Are you ever at a loss for words? Does your heart hurt when someone doesn’t understand your feelings and emotions? Take a breath and pray. The Lord will fill in the blanks. You don’t need to have the words when you have the Holy Spirit and Christ.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, even though we have over 171,000 words in the English language, our command fails when trying to express ourselves. Help us communicate how we are feeling. Let your words supplement our own. Be with us and help those around us understand where we are coming from. We love you and pray for your guidance and love. In your name, Amen.
