3:91 – I’m Talking To The (Wo)man in the Mirror
#faithbites #faithjourney mirror
Do you know what your strengths are? How about your weaknesses? I thought I knew how I acted until I saw my youngest be a mirror image of me. She was acting up, yelling, screaming, and just not being herself. Then after a long good night sleep, she was right as rain. I realized that is me. When I’m in the moment, I don’t see it. God puts people in our lives to show us the reflection we can’t see in ourselves. And as Michael Jackson sang, “I’m starting with the man in the mirror. I’m asking him to change his ways“.
What is your mirror showing you? Are you ready to change your ways?
Scripture
- For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like. But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing. – 1:23-25
Reflection
Are we even looking in the mirror anymore? Are we trying to see what others see? When we look, do we see God looking back at us? Is this the vision we want.
We need to make sure we that we look at the Word of God and live his Word. If not, we are like a reflection that vanishes.
When others look at us, do they see God or do they see us? When we look at those we have influence over, are we seeing our God given talents reflected back, or our negative traits?
These aren’t easy questions to ask. But if we want to make a difference, if we want to truly change, we have to start with ourselves. That only comes from have a good hard look in the mirror and seeing what is reflected back to you. The one caveat is to ask someone who you truly trust what image you display. They can provide a great sounding board.
Sometimes I like what I see, other times I don’t. But I need to keep looking at the mirror to make sure I am focused on God’s words and his reflection.
Challenge
What do you see when you look in the mirror? Is it God shining back? If not, think of one baby step you can take to make your image like his.
Prayer
Lord, let your light shine on us. Let our reflection be that of you. We want to be a mirror for you, your word, and your mission. Give us our strength and determination to ask the hard questions and make a change towards being more like you. In your name Jesus, Amen.
