April 19 – It Is Finished…Or Is It?

2:109 – It Is Finished…Or Is It?

#faithbites #faithjourney finished

Today is Good Friday, a day when we remember Jesus’s death on the cross. We mourn for his loss, but we call it good because of his sacrifice, we are saved.

Before his last breath, Jesus said “It is finished”. How could it be finished if we are still sinful? How could it be finished if we still need salvation and need Christ in our lives?

To me, when Jesus said it was finished he meant too things. First, his mission to take the sins of the world and bridge the gap of human and God. Second, his physical life was finished, with his eternal life beginning a new.

On this day, a day when Jesus’s human life was over, we can use it as a starting point to live like Jesus and follow his teachings.

Scripture

  • From noon until three in the afternoon darkness came over all the land. 46 About three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eli, Eli,lema sabachthani?” (which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”). – Matthew 25:45-46
  • So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!”And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit. – John 19:30

Reflection

I can’t imagine being on a cross. My life draining from my hands, my feet, and my side. Knowing that I have all the power in heaven and Earth to stop this pain, but I don’t because I am doing this for all humanity.

Then wondering if my father has forsaken me. Am I now alone?

Even as Christ knew that this is how everything should be, would give me some solace but the pain, I can’t imagine.

So while we remember his death on the cross, we also look forward to Sunday when he rises again. When all of God’s word comes true.

We know that his mission on Earth was finished, but ours to serve and follow him his just beginning.

Charge

While you celebrate this Holy Week. Take time to remember the human life of Jesus and the pain and sacrifice he went through. Remember his words “It Is Finished” and use that a rallying cry to continue your faith and be strong in your dedication to Jesus

Prayer

King of Kings, thank you for your ultimate sacrifice. Thank you for going through with your earthly mission when most of us would walk away. You conquered death so we can live. Give us the strength to follow you and use your life as our model. In your name, Amen.
