2:67 – Instant Family
#faithbites #faithjourney instant
At our house, Friday night, is movie night. Tonight’s selection was Instant Family. It’s about a couple who decide to adopt kids. Instead of adopting a baby, they end up adopting a Latina 15 year old and her two siblings. The movie didn’t sugarcoat adoption or how “perfect” the kids would be. In fact, the language was a little harsh, but very realistic. It was fun watching it with a social worker. I even got a little teary eyed at the end.
In most cases, we don’t get to chose our family. We are born into it, we chose our spouse, and then we “make” our kids. We don’t chose who they are but to have them or not. For many, their friends are their family. They love them like parents or siblings, through thick and thin. Some friends we chose, some are by happenstance, but they are family.
There is one family that we can chose to be active in: God’s family. He knew us before we were born, but we can chose to live among his people and his family.
Scripture
- But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, – John 1:12
- So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone, in whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord. In him you also are being built together into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit. -Ephesians 2:19-22
Reflection
A church family can be in your instant family. Suddenly, you have hundreds of brothers and sisters who love you for who you are and for your faith. Just like a family, especially a foster/adoption as in the movie, there are rocky parts. You may not always get along. You may disagree and have issues with each other. But in the end, you are still family. You will grow through your faith and fellowship in the Lord.
My church family has been awesome to me. Through surgery, sickness, depression, anxiety, joy, and fun, they have been there. There are times when we disagree, but they are my outlet. As my eldest says, I go out to the movies with the boys from church :-).
The best part about this family, is it doesn’t cost. Just believe in the risen Lord, and he will bring you to his house and his family. We were brought to the family through our eldest and school. How will you join your instant family?
Charge
Are you looking for your new adoptive family? Do are you searching for your place? God is there to help guide you. Take a moment to think about how you can join your family. We are waiting for you.
Prayer
Lord, thank you making me part of your family. Thank you for my new instant family. Help us all to remember that we are loved and have a place at the table. Remind us that all families love, argue, fight, console, and grow. Help those who don’t know you to find a place in your house and with your family. In your name, Amen.
