Our Shadow<\/p>\n

What is a shadow but the absence of light? We call it a reflection of ourselves, but really it is all of the light that goes around us that makes our shadow. This morning I was driving my youngest to spend the day with her aunt and it was very very early, the “sun was just waking up” as she said. As we were driving she screamed, “Daddy, look at the car shadow”. And there it was, almost a perfect shadow as we were driving down the highway. Next, without prompting she said “Just like the shadow of Jesus in our hearts”. I have never heard that expression before. I wasn’t sure if she was talking about the Holy Spirit, Jesus living in our hearts, or what. But, I said, “Yes, just like that.”<\/p>\n

When I started to think about shadows, I guess she is right. If we follow Jesus, and Jesus is God’s light, then his shadow would be in our heart. We would carry that shadow wherever we go, as we are bathed in his light.\u00a0 Now if Jesus is in our heart, and his light shines on us, what does our shadow show?<\/p>\n

\n

“the people living in darkness<\/span>
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>have seen a great light;<\/span><\/span>
\non those living in the land of the shadow of death”<\/span>
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>a light has dawned” – Isaiah 9:2<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

“The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it” – John 1:5<\/a><\/p>\n

“Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.” -James 1:17<\/a><\/p>\n

\n

The light comes and the shadows vanish. An object moves and the shadow changes. But God’s gifts from above do not change like shifting shadows. His light is constant; surrounding us, comforting us, and protecting us. Our shadow is not caused by darkness or absence of light, but rather by the radiant light from above that can not be overcome.<\/p>\n

We can choose how others see our shadow. It is hard for people to see your heart (unless you are a doctor but I digress). But they can see how your heart and saved spirit turn into actions. They can see your kindness, love, generosity, understanding, empathy, and so much more. Your shadow is long and one of caring and love. Likewise, negative actions and emotions can lead to a very long and harmful shadow that blocks out rather than radiates God’s love. This is your choice. How you listen to God and live by his word, determines the length and type of your shadow. Like my little one said “Jesus’s shadow lives in our heart”.<\/p>\n

Are you ready to show the world that Jesus’s shadow lives in your heart? Through your actions, can you share his light with the world?<\/p>\n
