Last night, after a rough day, I posted on Facebook, that I believe that there are two Americas. I said that based on what I’ve been seeing in people’s thoughts, words, deeds, and actions. A friend, asked me if I believe in God or in two Amerikas (his spelling). I was confused by the question, so I decided to dig into it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Merriam-Webster<\/a> defines believe as “to consider to be true or honest”, “to accept the word or evidence of”, “to hold as opinion”, “to accept something as true, genuine, or real”, “to have a firm or wholehearted religious conviction or persuasion: to regard the existence of God as fact”, “to have a firm conviction as to the goodness, efficacy, or ability or something”, and “to hold an opinion”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He was equating my belief in two Americas in the same light as the definition that relates to God as fact. He brought up a really good point about what is going on in our culture. Words have meaning and often have multiple meanings. Saying I believe ham and pineapple is the best pizza toppings doesn’t mean I don’t believe in God or that the level of belief is the same or has the same meaning. While I hate the semantics games we all (and me too) play, we need to look at what the person really means and if we don’t know, ASK. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
