March 19 – Faith Isn’t Quantifiable. Believe!
4:79 – Faith Isn’t Quantifiable. Believe!

#faithbites #faithjourney Quantifiable

Setting

I’m a Star Trek nerd and I’m proud. The idea that we could come together and solve our differences with science and exploration always intrigued me. Ever since t was young I wanted to understand how and why things worked. If there was an answer to be found, I’d figure it out and then teach others.

While this has served me well, when it comes to faith, there is no scientific answer. Faith isn’t quantifiable. Last night I was watching a Star Trek Voyager episode, Sacred Ground, where a member of the crew was dying and Captain Janeway has to go on a religous trek to save her. Captain Janeway is a scientist and wanted to find the reason her crew member was dying. How could technology save her, what was the challenge to overcome. Everytime she used science to solve it, she failes. In the end, it wasn’t about any of that, it was letting go and having true faith. While she saved the crew member, the doctor found a scientific answer for the cure but it was through faith they go there.

To me, God has given us science to help explain his world. Science doesn’t create, God does.

Today’s Questions: How would your life be different if we didn’t try to find why God does what he does, but just believe. Does finding a quantifiable reason diminish the mystery of God or help increase your faith?

Scripture
  • Proverbs 3:5-6 – Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.
  • 2 Corinthians 5:7 – For we walk by faith, not by sight.
Reflection

I will be honest hear, my scientific mind has tried to find answers for everything. Maybe Lazarus wasn’t really dead but Jesus had medicine that they didn’t know about to cure him. Perhaps the flaming Chariot Elijah saw wasn’t from God but a chashed airplane or UFO. I’ve always tried to find a way to explain away miracles. I’m trying to get to the point that the how doesn’t matter except God commanded it. When you have that mindset you aren’t trying to figure it out so you can replicate it. You are in awe and wonder of our God.

We are to follow God and not lean on our own understanding. He will make clear the paths. If we need to know how to do something, he will help is. We should honor the wonder and miracles that he provides.

As we close, have true faith without seeing. Know that God loves you, will make straight your path, and provide the needed answers.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, help us to be in awe of you. Remind us that faith is just that, faith. We don’t have to understand how you do things to know you can do them. It’s not up to us to quantify your works. We just need to believe in your power and plan. Help us to believe like you taught us. In your name, Amen.
