Setting

If you walked into my house right now, you would say that it is a disaster. My kitchen is being demolished tomorrow. The floor is torn up, everything from the counters, cabinets, and pantry are in my living room, on my dining room table, and in my spare bedroom. For someone with anxiety and a need for control, it’s a hot mess. Everyone I talk to tries to tell me that it will be worth it in the end. They say I will have a lovely kitchen, my house will increase in value, and it will be what I’ve always wanted. But the struggle is real.

The example above is just a minor illustration of how hard things can be. We struggle in our jobs, relationships, finances and more trying to do to the best we can. Without a belief in Christ, it’s hard to see why we do it and why it’s worth it in the end. But trust him, it is!

Scripture
  • Galatians 6:9 – So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up.
  • 1 Corinthians 15:58 – So, my dear brothers and sisters, be strong and immovable. Always work enthusiastically for the Lord, for you know that nothing you do for the Lord is ever useless.
Reflection

First, Jesus tells us that life will be hard. He said to take up his yoke and learn how to live from him (Matthew 11:29). Second, while we know life is hard, God created us with specific talents to make the work light and help us succeed. Our readings for today, tell us not to give up. We will reap a harvest of blessings if we keep our faith in Christ. Let us turn our eyes and hearts to the Lord so that we work hard and know that he will always keep his promises. In other words, it will be worth it.

Sometimes my kids have a hard time seeing that their work will pay off. We often have to create goals with rewards so they see their progress. Our faith is like that. Sometimes we work for years and don’t see the rewards that God has promised. It could be that the reward is already there and we don’t see it or we are looking for the wrong reward.

Our God is honest and trustworthy. We can be impatient and want it all to be the way we want it and when we want it. Heck, I want my kitchen done yesterday but I know it will be a long week and at the end of the week, it will be all ok! God makes it worth it.

Challenge

What is causing you stress? Is there something in your life that you just aren’t sure if it’s worth it? The first part of the challenge is to write it down. List the pros and cons. Then share it with a friend for their advice. All through out the process, share it with God. He will give you strength and show you that indeed it is all worth it!

Prayer

Father God, thank you for creating us with skills and abilities to tackle the tasks you want us to accomplish. We pray for your help when we feel frustrated and want to just give up. We ask for your strength to open our eyes to see that following you is indeed worth it. Our hearts know the truth but sometimes our minds get in the way. We ask for your peace, comfort, and understanding as we tackle all the challenges in our lives. As ask all of this in your name, Amen.
