Dec 5 – Practice What You Preach
2:339 – Practice What You Preach

#faithbites #faithjourney practice

We’ve all heard it, but do we know what it means? Practice what you preach.

I’ve been in meetings where people will say the words their audience want to hear, but their manner is the exact opposite. A perfect example is someone giving a two hour lecture on how great active learning is. Seems to not match up.

Likewise, in faith, many people share the good news of Jesus but don’t act like him. You can’t say our God is a God of love and forgiveness, but not love or forgive.

It doesn’t work. If we want to be like Jesus, let’s practice what he preaches.

Scripture
  • But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. – James 1:22
  • Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth. – 1 John 3:18
  • So practice and observe whatever they tell you—but not what they do. For they preach, but do not practice. – Matthew 23:3
Reflection

I dont have many words tonight as scripture is clear. Let’s not deceive ourselves. As Yoda says, do or do not, there is no try.

We must look at our actions and match them with our words. And those words should be the words of Jesus.

Challenge

Take a deep hard look st your words and actions. Do they match? If you think they do, ask a true friend. Someone who will speak truth to you. If they don’t match, start praying. Ask God for help.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, thank you for your words and directions for life. We are often led astray by our own personal wants, desires, and temptations. Help us to be strong and true in our words and actions. When we fail, help us to get back to you. We want to be your examples on Earth. Guide us, teach us, and help us serve that mission. In your name, Amen.
