December 2 – Checkboxes or Impact?
336 – Checkboxes or Impact?

#faithbites #faithjourney Impact

I was laying in bed this morning enjoying the silence of the house when I started to think about the day ahead. I envisioned the whole day including what I would say, do, feel, and accomplish. To be honest, it was a bit disappointing.  Not that I got things done or didn’t, but rather that it was the same day I’ve lived before. I could check all the boxes of the day but didn’t see an impact. I’m not looking for earthshattering days every day, but to know exactly what the day is going to bring and how I’m going to react leaves something to be desired.

Sure there are unexpected things that will come up as that is life. But then, I will accomplish those and check those boxes. The challenge is how do we take these every day prescripted moments and transform them into impact moments?

Scripture

“You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people’s feet. “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. – Matthew 5:13 – 16

Reflection

As much as I want to check off boxes and progress, my goal is to positively impact those around me. In the Matthew verses, we see that amazing things like salt can be worthless when their taste is gone. We are like salt. It can be used to improve all of our food and is necessary to live or it can clump with moisture and need to be tossed out. When we cook, we use salt in pretty much everything, even cakes. It doesn’t need to be a special meal to need the salt to make it better. We can use our light and our salt to improve even these every day “routing” actions.

The only problem comes if our salt loses its saltiness. I can honestly say, I’ve been there before. This normally happens when I need a spiritual recharge. It could be communion, prayer, reading the Word, or just letting the Holy Spirit work through me. That recharge is available, the hard part is when we are going through the motions checking off the boxes, we sometimes forget that we need to check the recharge box too.

I know most of the boxes that I will check off today. My goal is to make those boxes have an impact in the lives of others.

Charge

Our lives aren’t just the extraordinary events. It’s the day to day activities and actions that build a life. While it can seem routine, it is up to us through the gifts God has given us, to make an impact. Take a moment to look at one of your checkboxes and find a way to positively impact those around you.

Lord, help me to not be consumed by the routine. Let me see your glory in everything I need to do. Give me the perception to know that when I turn to your, my actions with have a positive impact in those around me.
