November 23 – Do You Have The Skills to Do The Job?
327 – Do You Have The Skills to Do The Job?

#faithbites #faithjourney skills

Last night I was putting things away from Thanksgiving dinner and thought about how I would eat leftovers the next day. My favorite is a turkey sandwich with a little bit of mayo then warmed up in the microwave. That is always good. But then I realized I didn’t have any mayo. I wondered if I could find a recipe to make homemade and would it be as good. Then today I was researching a weighted blanket and realize how expensive they are. Then I thought could I do one myself. After looking up DIY ways to do it, I quickly realized that I didn’t have the skills to pull it off.

Now, don’t get me wrong, I probably could do it with lots of time, equipment, money, and help, but is that where my skills lie? How much time would it take for me to try to do something, that someone else could do much more easily, cheaper, and faster?

As my life normally does, I started thinking about being a good Christian. I wondered what skills and training we needed. While there are lots of specialties that you could do, to be a “good Christian”, you only need to do two things. Love God, Love People. That’s it. No special training. Not schooling or intense classes. If you treat others as you would want to be treated, pray faithfully, and believe, then you do it. it truly is something that anyone can do.

Scripture
  •  Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.” – Mark 12:30-31
  •  If anyone speaks, they should do so as one who speaks the very words of God. If anyone serves, they should do so with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen. – 1 Peter 4:11
Reflection

Previously we talked about how God has given us all different skills for his plan to unfold. We need to use those skills to truly be the person he wants us to be. But that doesn’t mean we need all of those skills to be a good Christian. It also doesn’t mean that we are perfect.

Listen, I mess up every day. Sometimes it’s by choice, other times, it’s just me messing up and I beg for forgiveness. I work on these traits every day. But to truly be Good, as we know no one is good except God and through God. (Mark 10:18).  The one thing I know is that if I love all and worship Jesus, all will be good.

So no, I didn’t make homemade mayo or a weighted blanket. I may try the mayo one day. But I know that others have made that and I can get it if I need it. Just like being a good Christian I can do on my own, learning more about myself and my faith, I need help. Luckily, I have many who will help me.

Charge

Do you consider yourself a good Christian? What skills do you use to be good? Are these skills that you were born with or have perfected over time? Remember, that we can’t be good on our own, that only through God are we good.

Lord, help me to be good through you. Allow me to use the skills you have given me to love you and others. At the same time, help me understand where I need to leverage others skills and where I need to improve mine.
