October 10 – The Nothing

283 – The Nothing

#faithbites #faithjourney nothing

One of my favorite movies as a kid was “The NeverEnding Story”. It’s an awesome fantasy story where a kid from the real world is reading a book that reflects what is happening in his life. The main “villain” is the movie is called “The Nothing”. Towards the end of the movie, you met this evil wolf that you assume is the nothing but he isn’t and the nothing truly is nothing. The absence of everything. That always got to me, not to mention the awesome luck dragon Falcor.

Having depression and being busy, something we see so many things but feel nothing. It’s the emptiness in our heart while feeling the need for a connection. How do we connect? How do we prioritize? No matter what we do, it seems like we are falling deeper and deeper into the emptiness. (Hint: That’s the villain in the sequel.)

When the Nothing approaches, what can we do?

Scripture
  • Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. – Matthew 11:28-29
  • Let him not trust in emptiness, deceiving himself, for emptiness will be his payment. It will be paid in full before his time, and his branch will not be green. – Job 15:31-32
Reflection

Throughout the Bible, we see that God is our strength, our refuge, and our salvation. There are times though when that is hard to remember. When we look at our life, even though it has good things, and we feel empty. We feel like “the nothing” has come for us.

Call it the way of the world. Call it sin. Whatever you want to call it, we all feel it at times. That no matter how good we are, we aren’t good enough. That no matter how light our schedule is, we don’t have enough time or strength to complete everything.

It’s at these times when I try to look to the Lord. When I learn from him and seek rest. While physical rest helps, knowing that the Lord is by my side helps. I wish I was strong enough to fully give over and trust the Lord becuase I know if I did, he would make it better. I hope that as I continue to study his word, live with his people, that I will truly give up my problems to him.

Bastien eventually defeats “the Nothing” by giving the Child-LIke Empress a name. I know the name of my Salvation: Jesus Christ

Charge

Think about how you feel today? Are you completing your tasks? Are you ahead of schedule? Maybe you are feeling a little depressed. Maybe a bit empty. Has The Nothing taken residence in your heart? If so, give your problems a name. Call out to the Lord. He will answer.

Lord, I know I that you will solve my problems and heal my heart. Give me the strength to do so. Allow my mind and my heart to act in unison turning over all my worries, concerns, and nothingness to you. For we are in your family and feel your warm embrace.
