The Joys of Traveling

Summer is here. School is out. People are traveling for vacations, missions, visiting family, and to explore the world. This morning as I kissed my wife and kids goodbye for the day, I realized that all we do is travel. Travel to work. Travel for food. Travel for entertainment. Travel for worship. Travel for fun. Some travels are short, like going to get ice cream, while others are long like going to Kenya for a mission trip. And I would be remiss to not say a special prayer for the Trinity Lutheran Mission Trip in Kenya right now. Godspeed.

But we are always on the move. Planning, packing, executing, all in the desire to eventually come home, maybe more relaxed, maybe more educated, maybe more spiritually touched, maybe more excited. So many reasons to travel and come home.

During worship, we occasionally sing “God is on the Move”. It’s an upbeat some about God’s mighty ways. I guess if we are created in his image, we should be on the move as he is on the move.

“The Lord will keep you from all harm—
he will watch over your life;
the Lord will watch over your coming and going
both now and forevermore.” – Psalm  121:7-8

“He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation.” – Mark 16:15

“By day the Lord went ahead of them in a pillar of cloud to guide them on their way and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, so that they could travel by day or night.” – Exodus 13:21

We all travel, whether we know it or not. The travel may be physical like we talked about above or it may be spiritual as we move along our faith journey. God wants us to move and preach the gospel as he says in Mark. At the same time though, he keeps us from harm, he watches are coming goings, and he guides us.

As I think about the overnight trips for my family coming up where we are separated, I know that God is watching. As I think about our missionaries across the world, God is watching them. As I think about my kids just going to daycare and my wife to work, God is watching.

Wherever you travel, know that God is watching and protecting you.

Are you ready to travel with the Lord? Are you ready to follow his path as he guides you to your next destination?

I am ready with the help of God.
