February 18 – Being a Role Model

Today’s lesson is on being a role model or who follows you?

My kids are great mirrors for my behaviors. From seeing my 3-year-old grunt when she is dissatisfied with something to my8-year-old saying Gosh Dang it (I have changed the words to protect the not so innocent). Those are my actions. Those are my words. Too often we either don’t see our selves as role models or we don’t know that others are watching us and emulating what we do. During church today, Pastor Terry ask Whose footsteps are you following and where are you leading those who follow you? We are tempted all the time. It’s isn’t God tempting us, as he doesn’t tempt, but it ourselves and Satan. When you are being tempted what would your father in Heaven think and what about those who follow you?

“In everything set them an example by doing what is good. In your teaching show integrity, seriousness and soundness of speech that cannot be condemned, so that those who oppose you may be ashamed because they have nothing bad to say about us.” – Titus 2:7-8

Walk with the wise and become wise,
for a companion of fools suffers harm” – Proverbs 13:20

We are clothed in Christ Jesus (Gal. 3:21) and should try to be Christ-like. So often in media, we hear about “those Christians” not being Christianly. Or practice what you preach. We want those who oppose to be ashamed because they have nothing bad to say about us. That we follow Jesus. That we listen to the word. So when we look in that mirror of our children and friends, we see hope, peace. life, laughter, love, and faith. That we don’t see our kids using colorful language, or acting out in rage because they saw it in us. Let them give unselfishly of their time and energy as they see us.

Are you willing to acknowledge that people follow you? Are you willing to understand that you lead others? Are you ready to look to the Lord as your guide?
